As we race for second chances, let us not forget the many inmates still behind the walls. For many of them, these walls are not just made up of bricks and stone, but it symbolises their personal challenges, fears and anxieties for their future. And yet, like all of us, they too have hopes, dreams and aspirations.

This year, inmates expressed what “Race for Second Chances” meant to them through their artworks, using their designs to convey their hopes and aspirations to you. Let's break down these walls they face and show #YRCare by participating in #YRRace 2022 now!

The inspiration behind the design comes from the race itself. The collective effort of everyone to make the “YRP Run” successful as it is. From organizing the event, logistics, volunteers, the runners, practically everyone participation to make it happen. As i, myself had participated in 2009 with my son just after my release. It was one of the most memorable experience in my life. Especially doing, “The YRP Run” with my son.

The Yellow Ribbon Project offers inmates more than just second chances. Through its muti-faceted support and programs It helps us restore some dignity to our lives that inevitably lost when incarcerated. In a small way, they restore our humanity and I wanted to return the favour giving the yellow ribbon it’s own life. I noticed the free-flowing nature of the YR logo resembled a pair of legs, which because the idea was to promote a race, were screaming out for a pair of shoes. The result was quite striking, simple and to the point.

My inspiration came from my family. My wife sent me a photo of her and my son, with him showing V shape sign of victory with his fingers. This photo is my source of encouragement, motivation, and energy. My son with the victory pose mean a lot as I know they will always be there for me and cheering me on to be strong and persevere in this race of life. I am a multi times inmate and I have ran this life race several time, with each time ending up falling short. And whenever I fell, my family were always there cheering for me to get up again, not give up and continue the race. With my family cheering, I believe that I end this race in victory.

Once a caterpillar despised by the garden society. Damaged the beauty of the green for the sole reason of survival. It is in the very garden it seeks solace within a cocoon. Despite the vulnerability, the garden and the nature embraces and protects the cocoon and provide it with another chance at life to spread its beautiful wings across the world. Just like how the butterfly bring beauty to the nature, we are given a second chance from this rehabilitation institution, and to mingle into the society once again.
